The Dawgs

Richt says no big changes to his coaching staff. That won't make some Georgia fans happy this year. Defensive coordinator Willie Martinez was particularly under the gun, but let's be fair. Georgia didn't have the defensive manpower this year, especially up front. The loss of Jeff Owens hurt and Ellerbee never came back to his old form after getting hurt early.

Point totals given up this year:
41 to Bama
38 to LSU
49 to Fla.
38 to Kentucky (KENTUCKY!)
45 to the trade school.

One player missing should not cause this. This team was undisciplined, unprepared, shoddy tacklers, and unfocused. That is coaching.

I didn't say Owens' absence caused the poor defensive play. I said it contributed.
Georgia just did not have the standout players up front that they have had in past years. The DEs barely made a play all season and Ellebee was a disappointment. Hell, I'm not even sure who started at the OLB spot besides Curran (who was good.) The secondary did have some strong games, but no pass rush without heavy blitzing put them in man to man against good receivers a lot.
If you read my post about Georgia last week you will see that I was down on the UGA staff, specifically Richt, for failing to develop this team. The defense never got better. Richt and Co. need to answer for that. They can't just count on a big recruit to come in and save the day.
Also indicative of the weak coaching is the fact that Georgia was one of the most penalized teams in the country. The Dawgs were shockingly inept at times in basic things like staying onsides and illegal procedures.
I wish I could see this changing next year but unless Richt gets a sudden dose of Old Testament religion, Georgia is liable to sabotage its own efforts again and are unlikely to have Moreno and Stafford to bail the team out.
